Let's Play Croquet!

We could spend the weekend researching where the game originated and 'who' created it?  It appears to be from the European side of the world. Here is the 'best' information I found this weekend. on the History of Croquet

How to play? Can be just as lengthy of a research, since there are several ways to play the game. From number of players to court set ups....  

We will be playing the Nine Widget {Back Yard} Game, for the Community Tournament project I'm working with.
